St Bride's Church

Fleet Street, London, EC4Y 8AU
Tel: +44 (0)20 7427 0133

st brides church londonSir Christopher Wren rebuilt St Bride's Church with its distinctive wedding cake style, in the 1670's. From its position, tucked away down a little passage and tightly surrounded by other buildings, the church is easily missed by people travelling down Fleet Street. Maybe it's hiding. In World War II it was very badly damaged.

The crypt contains an exhibition chronicling the history of the parish over the centuries. Sections of Roman pavement dating from the 2nd century are also visible from there.

Appropriately, as Fleet Street is known as the spiritual home of the press, St Bride's has become the printing trade's own church.

Samuel Pepys, the famous diarist, was christened there and although much of the newspaper business has now moved out of Fleet Street, the links still continue today with press related services.

Directly behind St Bride's is St Bride's Printing Library. This public reference library is a major source of information on all aspects of printing and bookbinding. It was started with the collection of William Blades in 1891.
