Sir John Soane (1753-1837), the designer of the Bank of England and The Dulwich Picture Gallery, left this museum to the nation in 1837.
Situated in the house he both built and lived in, the museum contains his collection of paintings, statues and furniture. It is unchanged since he lived there.
This is an amazing house! It's much bigger than it looks from the outside and is absolutely crammed with statues and works of art. Don't be fooled by the ordinary exterior. If you only go to one museum while in London go to this one! And it's free!
Among the many interesting items in the museum are the original plans for the Law Courts and the Houses of Parliament.
