bank england museum londonThe Bank of England was founded in 1694. It is also known as the 'old lady of Threadneedle Street', after the street in which the main entrance stands.
The outside wall dates back to the 1788 building designed by Sir John Soane. A statue of Soane is set in the wall of the bank. Kenneth Graham, famous for the popular children's book 'The Wind in the Willows', worked at the bank for 29 years, in which time he climbed the ladder from being just a humble clerk, to the lofty position of Secretary of the Bank of England.
The museum is housed within the Bank of England; right at the heart of the City of London. It traces the history of the Bank from its foundation by Royal Charter to its role today as the nation's central bank.
There are gold bars here, dating from ancient times, to the modern market bar, coins and a unique collection of bank notes.
There are also many other items you might not expect to find - such as the pike and muskets which were once used to defend the bank, and Roman pottery and mosaics, uncovered when the bank was rebuilt in the 1930's. Among the many documents are some relating to famous customers, such as the Duchess of Marlborough, George Washington, and Horatio Nelson.
In addition, two award winning interactive systems allow visitors to look behind the doors of the nation's central bank to examine the intricacies of bank note design and production.bank of england museumVarious presentations are available for groups of different ages, interests and abilities.
