Eserpentine gallery london englandvery Saturday during exhibitions, there is a talk in the Gallery at 15:00.
Architect J G West originally designed The Serpentine Gallery, built in 1934, as a tea pavilion. In 1970 it was launched as an art gallery. Uniquely situated in a Royal Park, the Gallery is surrounded by Kensington Gardens and is close to the Serpentine Lake.
Rather than having a permanent collection, the Galley is the venue for a regularly changing exhibition programme, which recognises the achievement of established British and international artists as well as including work by younger artists.
The gallery may be small but it manages to make its mark by exhibiting some of the most interesting and controversial pieces of modern art. Exhibitions in recent years have included such things as a fountain flowing with real chocolate and the highly popular 'Take Me I'm Yours', an experimental exhibition where the public were actively encouraged to remove pieces of 'art' such as photo-copied pictures and clothes arranged on the floor and take them home!
Most controversial was the 'Piss Art' exhibition, the main feature of which involved plaster casts, moulded out of holes made in snow by the artist urinating!
