Kgreenwich london england uking Charles II, who had a strong interest in astronomy, founded the Royal Observatory in 1675, with the express view of helping to solve the problem of finding longitude whilst at sea and not in visual contact with dry land.
Sir Christopher Wren obliged with a handsome building, now called Flamsteed House after the first Astronomer Royal, a 28 year old clergyman called John Flamsteed.
In 1884 it was agreed at a conference in Washington DC that the Prime Meridian for the world should be located at Greenwich. It was also established that the longitude would be measured in two directions from the Prime Meridian.
By the middle of the twentieth century London air had become so polluted by smoke and night light that it became necessary to move the Royal Greenwich Observatory to Hertsmonceux Castle in Sussex. At the same time Flamsteed House became part of the National Maritime Museum, since when the fine collections of scientific instruments has grown apace.
