(NOW CLOSED but the site has been left up on Virtual London because of the interest generated by the Dome, so that we can satisfy the curiosity of all those who missed out on seeing it)
The Dome at Greenwich. The destination of the millennium. You'll be amazed and challenged. You'll be thrilled and entertained. You'll discover more about who we are, what we do and where we live. You'll explore our minds, bodies and souls.
You'll see a specially commissioned Blackadder film in Skyscape, experience 14 exciting themed zones and watch the dancing, flying, rocking Millennium Show. However old you are, you'll have a day out you'll always remember. The Dome itself is based in Greenwich which is in many respects the ""home of time"" . During the 16th Century navigation was far from an exact science. Time was local and could vary widely and distance was measured by latitude only. Without the exact measurement of longitude, ships could not chart their position accurately. This led to many disasters. That's why in 1675 King Charles II founded the Royal Observatory, Greenwich. However, accurate measurement of longitude was not finally achieved by Harrison until the 18th Century.
The International Meridian Conference held in Washington DC in 1884 confirmed Greenwich as the location for the World's Prime Meridian and the home of time.
