Bunhill Fields

Originally called 'Bone Hill Fields' this Saxon burial ground was re-opened in 1665 for victims of the Great Plague and now contains over 120,000 bodies.

Famous gravestones include John Wesley (founder of the Methodist church), John Bunyan (who wrote 'Pilgrims Progress'), William Blake and Daniel Defoe (author of Robinson Crusoe).

An epitaph on a large tomb in the middle of Bunhill Fields reads:

'Here lyes Dame Mary Pace relict of Sir Gregory Pace Bart. She departed this life March 4 1728 in the 56th year of her age. In 67 months she was tapped 66 times, had taken away 240 gallons of water, without ever repining her case or ever fearing the operation'.
