Admiralty Arch
.
Trafalgar Square, London, SW1A 2DY
Description
Tadmiralty arch london englandhis impressive arch forms a gateway between Trafalgar Square and The Mall. It was built in 1910 as a tribute to Queen Victoria. There are three archways. The outer two are open to traffic but the middle one is only used during royal processions from Buckingham Palace.
The rooms above the arch were used as navy offices but since 1995 they have been empty and unfortunately, are not open to the public. However there are now plans to open up the building as a centre for tourism and the arts.
The architect Sir Aston Webb also redesigned the surrounding area at the same time. This included widening the Mall and rebuilding the front of Buckingham Palace.
