The Wellcome Institute for the History of Medicine takes its name from its benefactor, Sir Henry Wellcome. Though American born, he established a major pharmaceutical company in Britain. His collection of pharmacy, medical and surgical artefacts can be seen at the Wellcome Museum of the History of Medicine, at the Science Museum.
The Wellcome Institute in Euston also houses both permanent and changing exhibitions, but it is probably most renowned for its library, which provides library and archive resources, and research and reading facilities for those interested in the history of medicine and allied subjects.
The library is among the finest in its field. Its collections and services are continually being expanded and they include materials related to the development of modern medicine.
Materials in the library range from reference sources and periodicals to primary manuscripts, both western and oriental, contemporary medical archives, early printed books, modern medicine texts and the iconography of medicine.
Exhibitions are mounted regularly in the gallery on the fourth floor of the library. Other exhibitions are mounted from time to time in the reading room of the library. There is also the 'Science of Life' permanent exhibition on the ground floor of the Wellcome Building, mounted by the Wellcome Centre for Medical Science.
