Queen Victoria (1819-1902) came to the throne in 1837 following the death of King William IV.
Three years later she married her cousin, Albert. The marriage was arranged as soon as they were born. Luckily they got on well. In fact Victoria idolised her husband.
They shared strong moral beliefs. A typical comment from him reviewed his life thus: "I have had wealth, rank and power; but if these were all I had, how wretched I should be!"
Prince Albert died from typhoid in 1861 at the age of 42. Victoria never got over it.
She continued to reign until her death in 1901. Her reign lasted 63 years making it the longest ever reign by a British monarch. She was a very popular monarch with the whole nation. Not least among her fans was the Scottish poet, William McGonagall.
