London's Movers & ShakersBehind the vibrant, majestic visage of modern London lies a complex hierarchy of people. Meet them here.
Opera, Ballet & Dance
By the standards of some other countries Britain is not as well provided for as many would wish when it comes to Opera, Ballet and Dance in the capital city.
This places a greater responsibility on those who do provide, and performances at the Royal Opera House, Sadlers Wells, and the London Coliseum tend to be of a very high order.
Other Ceremonies
Changing the Guard at Horse Guards Parade. We all know that "they're changing the guard at Buckingham Palace" but they also change it at Horse Guards and slightly further a field at Windsor Castle, in Berkshire.
Queen Victoria
Queen Victoria (1819-1902) came to the throne in 1837 following the death of King William IV.
Three years later she married her cousin, Albert. The marriage was arranged as soon as they were born.
Quiet Water
Tranquillity is not a word normally associated with London's roads, or railways. But - long before commuting, complaints about heavy lorries, and the hectic pace of life at the end of the 20th Century - the Regent's Canal became the first great trunk route to link north London with the industrial Midlands and North of England.
Samuel Pepys
Samuel Pepys, diarist, womaniser, wife beater and politician, was born near Fleet Street in 1633. His family was not rich but he was very bright and managed to get a scholarship and earn a degree.
Shopping In London
Without doubt one of the principal reasons for coming to London is to take advantage of the excellent shopping facilities for which this great city is famed.
Many will come to London to buy antiques, of which an enormous array is available at any given time.
Sir Christopher Wren
London's top architect, Sir Christopher Wren, born in 1632, was responsible for much of the rebuilding of London following The Great Fire of 1666.
Wren drew up plans to rebuild the whole area destroyed in fire but agreement on the plans was never reached.
The BBC Proms
A well-established and highly popular British institution is the series of concerts held every year from around the middle of July to the middle of September.
In 1895 Robert Newman, manager of the newly-built Queen's Hall in London conceived what was to become the BBC Promenade Concerts and although Sir Henry Wood tends to be associated with the founding of the series it was Robert Newman who effectively launched the project.
The City of London - Part 1Part 1 -Introduction The City of London is a strange place. To a Brit, the 'City' doesn't mean the whole of London but simply the 'Square Mile' (actually 1.08 square miles) as it is colloquially known.
The City of London - Part 2Part 2 - Landmarks Many of the churches in the City are known as 'guild churches' to some of the city's Livery Companies, ancient institutions which are very close to the heart of city government.
