The Knollys Red Rose Rent (24th June)

Sir Robert Knollys was a distinguished knight of the 14th century. However, his expertise on the battlefield was not matched by his knowledge of mediaeval planning laws! After constructing a bridge over Seething Lane without due permission, he was arrested.

Luckily for Sir Robert, his fine record in all things military ensured that he was fined just one red rose from his garden per year to be presented to the Lord Mayor of London. This fine is still paid, and the churchwardens of All-Hallows-by-the-Tower process to The Mansion House to present the Lord Mayor with a single red rose, and the Lady Mayoress with a bouquet!
