Her Majesty the Queen is not allowed to enter the City (that is, the square mile in the very centre of London) without specific permission from the Lord Mayor of London. This gives you an idea of the power and importance of the Lord Mayor and the procession to mark his year in office is suitably grand.
Travelling in an 18th century gold carriage and attended by a vast array of dignitaries, ancient office holders, state trumpeters, livery companies and floats, the parade has been taking place annually for nearly 800 years.
This year's show will be over two and a half miles long and comprise of 52 floats, 200 horses, 14 bands, 21 military contingents, 20 horse drawn carriages and 6,500 people.
