Full Title: HRH The Princess Margaret, Countess of Snowdon
Born: Glamis Castle, Scotland, on August 21 1930, younger daughter of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth (the late Queen Mother).
Sadly Princess Margaret passed away peacefully in her sleep on the 9th February 2002, her funeral was held on Friday 15th February at Windsor Castle.
Education: At home with her sister, The Queen.
Marriage and family: Married Antony Armstrong-Jones in Westminster Abbey on May 6 1960. The marriage was dissolved in 1978.
They had two children - David Albert Charles (Viscount Linley, b. November 3 1961), and Lady Sarah Frances Elizabeth (b. May 1 1964).
Official roles: President and Chairman of the Council of the Girl Guides Association; President of the National Society and of the Royal Scottish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children; Grand President of the St John Ambulance Brigade; Colonel-in-Chief of Queen Alexandra's Royal Army Nursing Corps.
Was first President of the Royal Ballet; former President of the Sadler's Wells Foundation; Honorary Fellow of several learned societies; Honorary graduate of the Universities of Cambridge and Keele; a Master of the Bench of Lincoln's Inn; Colonel-in-Chief of several military units; Dame Grand Cross of the Royal Victorian Order; Dame Grand Cross of the Order of St John of Jerusalem; Patron or President of 80 organisations.
Life and times
The Princess's close relationship with the Guiding movement started as a child when she became a Brownie and then a Guide. She also learned to ride, swim and became a keen gardener.
At a very early age she became Patron (and later President) of the Scottish Children's League. She carried out a broad range of public duties and was particularly interested in welfare work. Much of her time was devoted to organisations working for the good of young people, children's well-being and the sick.
She loved music and ballet and was the first President of the Royal Ballet, still regularly supporting their work to the end of her life.
Princess Margaret had undertaken numerous overseas visits and had represented The Queen on many important occasions.
