HRH Princess Alexandra

Full Name: Alexandra Helen Elizabeth Olga Christabel

Born on 25 December 1936 at 3 Belgrave Square, London, her parents were The Prince George, Duke of Kent, and Princess Marina of Greece and Denmark. Baptised in the Private Chapel of Buckingham Palace she was destined to lead a life in close proximity to her fellow Royals.

Her education was extraordinary for the time and she had the privilege of being the first British Princess to have attended an ordinary British school, at Heathfield School, Ascot.

She married the Hon. Angus Ogilvy, second son of the Earl of Airlie, on 24 April 1963, at Westminster Abbey, an event watched by millions of people worldwide. They have two children, James and Marina, who take no part in the royal circle. Their father Angus, who was heir to the Earldom of Airlie, but did not succeed, was knighted in 1988.

The Princess has been an ardent and loyal supporter of the Royal Family, particularly in relation to their public duties and the endless rounds of visits and engagements that they are obliged to undertake. In the early years she stood in for the Queen on some visits abroad. As one who enjoyed greatly her company for an afternoon on one of her Scottish visits I can vouch for her wonderful abilities to charm and interest people, and to hold her subject.

The Blackie Foundation Trust, English National Opera, The London Philharmonic Choir, Anchor, Independent Age, St Christopher's Hospice, Nature in Art Trust, London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art and the World Wildlife Fund-UK are but a few of the worthy organisations that benefited from her on-going support.

She is with us still, regarded with much affection by the public at large, enjoying some leisure after a life almost totally devoted to the public service.
