Gordon's Wine Bar
.
Location: 47 Villiers Street
Tube: Embankment
If you can negotiate the narrow steep staircase, avoid tripping over the cat and then manage to find a way to the tiny bar, you'll find yourself in a different world - and it's just a stone's throw from Trafalgar Square.
One of London's oldest drinking haunts, Gordon's seems to have remained utterly unchanged for a good few hundred years. Antique prints and newspaper covers featuring major royal events (right up to the present day) adorn the cracking walls, dust encrusted bric-a-brac hangs from the ceilings and condensation drips from the roof above.
Venture further in and things seem to go even further back in time as you enter candle lit vaults furnished with bare wooden chairs and tables. It's easy to tell when someone has been drinking here because of the plaster in their hair, collected from the numerous times they will have smacked their heads on the crumbling arches. But this is all part of a visit to Gordon's.
As is the splendid wine list, sherry served from the barrel into either schooners or beakers, and generous portions of cheese to keep your senses afloat in the heady atmosphere. Without a doubt one of the finest and most atmospheric drinking holes in London - under the watchful eye of proprietor Luis Gordon himself
