Cittie of Yorke, The
.
Location: 22 High Holborn
Tube: Holborn
The huge Victorian clock on the front of this building suggests that there may be something of interest behind the façade. A pub has stood here since around 1430 and continues to serve the needs of barristers and solicitors from the nearby chambers. Ignore the small wood panelled bar on your left as you walk in and continue down the corridor a few yards.
You'll suddenly come into a vast cavern of a room with vaulted ceilings and huge 1,000 gallon vats of wine above the bar. To the right are dark wooden booths that allow the legal profession to discuss cases in private. Straight ahead you'll see an immense triangular coal stove which has warmed the entire place since the Battle of Waterloo in 1815. The perfect spot therefore for a winter's drink!
