cutty sark greenwich londonThe Cutty Sark (963 tons gross) was launched at Dumbarton, Clydeside on 22 November 1869. Her principal objective was to become the fastest back in the annual race to bring home the new season's tea from China, a goal she never achieved due to changing circumstances in the tea trade.
John Willis, her owner, combined with Hercules Linton, a brilliant designer with Scott and Linton, to produce a beautiful little clipper ship which was to lead an adventurous life, but always seeming to end up on the end of the line.
With the end of World War 2 Cutty Sark was once again redundant but in 1951 she was towed to Greenwich and moored off for the duration of the Festival of Britain. The Cutty Sark Society was formed and in December 1954 she was moved into a specially constructed dry dock at Greenwich.
In 1957 HM The Queen opened the display facility, since when over 15 million people worldwide have enjoyed the grace and beauty of this fine ship.
If you are thinking of visiting the Cutty Sark, why not purchase a London Pass which will admit you to this and many other London attractions for a single payment; it also includes travel by public transport within the London area on buses, tubes and trains, zones 1 - 6.
