County Hall

county hall london englandBuilding work on County Hall began in 1912 to provide a home for the offices of the London County Council. More recently the LCC became the GLC (Greater London Council), an elected body whose job it was to run London. Following power struggles between the socialist run GLC and the Conservative national government, the GLC was abolished in 1986.

The interior has now been converted into two hotels, a restaurant, luxury apartments and the Namco Station, an amusement centre containing virtual reality computer games, simulator rides and ten-pin bowling.

The London Aquarium has just opened below County Hall. The £25 million aquarium holds thousands of specimens including piranhas, stingrays and sharks.

To celebrate the new century, The Millennium Wheel, a giant big wheel with superb views of London, has been built next to County Hall.

Location: South Bank, London, SE1 7PB
