There has been a bridge on this spot since the 1760's, though the present one is about 100 years younger. The Bridge and the surrounding area get their name from an order of Dominican monks who had a Monastery here. They were known as the Black Friars because of their distinctive black habits.
Queen Victoria opened Blackfriars Bridge in November 1869.
Next to the bridge you can still see the pillars, which supported the old 1860's London, Chatham and Dover Railway Bridge.
